Moral Rating Agency: A Searchable Ledger of Corporate Responses to the Invasion of Ukraine

A WordPress site for the Moral Rating Agency, which rates how the world's largest companies responded to Russia's invasion of Ukraine. Its centre is the Indelible Ledger: 700+ company and brand entries, each with a five-dimension rating, a verdict and a searchable, sortable listing.

The challenge

Ratings that have to show their working

Each rating combines five scores (Degree, Speed, Attitude, Exposure and Power) through a published formula. Visitors, journalists and investors needed to see the score, the reasoning and the date it was set, not just a number.

Hundreds of companies, one page

The ledger covers parent companies and their brands. People arrive looking for one name, or want to compare the best and worst, so the list had to be searchable and sortable.

Our approach

Each company as its own entry

Each company is its own entry in WordPress, and the moral rating labels are kept as a second type of entry. A company entry holds its scores, related brands, nationality, announcement date and verdict. The home page shows them as rating cards. An info button on each card shows the formula and the result.

Search and ten sort orders

A search box finds companies and brands, and a sort menu orders the ledger alphabetically, by revenue, worst or best first, by nationality, or by any of the five dimensions.

The method beside the data

Thirteen menu sections explain the project, the thinking and method behind the ratings, the moral algorithm, a glossary (the lexicon) and news. So every score links back to how it was made.
